Getting the base layer right before the turf goes down makes a significant difference to how the lawn establishes and holds up over time. That’s where our turf underlay pumping service comes in.

Turf underlay pumping is how we get the base material down before the turf goes in. A blower truck pushes the soil blend through a hose and spreads it across the lawn area, evenly, and without disturbing the ground that’s already been prepared underneath. It removes the need for manual carting and spreading, and allows us to cover large areas quickly without heavy machinery driving across the prepared ground.

Why the Base Layer Matters

Turf needs something to root into. A compacted or nutrient-poor base means roots struggle to penetrate, water either pools or runs off, and the lawn never fully establishes.

A proper turf underlay blend provides the structure and drainage the root system needs in those first critical weeks. Once the turf knits into a well-prepared base, it’s significantly more resilient, better drought tolerance, fewer bare patches, and less ongoing maintenance.

Why Choose Mega Mulchers?

A turf job is only as good as what’s underneath it. We understand that, which is why we treat the underlay stage with the same attention as any other part of the process- the right material, applied evenly, at the correct depth.

We assess each site before the job starts. Ground conditions vary, and what works for one property won’t always suit another. That assessment means the volume we bring is accurate and the spread is consistent across the whole area.

Our blower trucks cover Melbourne and Sydney, and we work alongside landscapers and builders regularly, so we understand how to fit into a broader project schedule without causing delays.

Questions you may have

Q1. What is turf underlay made of?

Turf underlay is usually a mix of sandy loam and compost. The sandy loam stops the base from compacting over time and helps water drain through rather than sit on the surface. Compost covers the nutrient side- new turf roots don't have much to draw from in bare soil, so having it in the mix makes a real difference in those first few weeks.

As a general guide, 100mm of prepared underlay is the minimum recommended depth for most residential lawns. For areas with particularly poor existing soil or heavy clay, going slightly deeper will produce better results. We can advise on the right depth once we've seen the site.

Yes. The hose on our blower truck extends up to 60 metres, which covers most residential blocks regardless of access. We park on the street or driveway and pump the material over fences or through gates without needing vehicle access to the yard itself.

Q4. How soon after pumping can turf be laid?

Yes. We supply and deliver the turf underlay blend as part of the service. You don't need to source material separately, we handle both the product and the installation in a single visit.
